The Girton House was built in 1896 as a residence for Professor and Mrs. W.W. Girton and family. Girton was a faculty member from 1896 to 1912, and Acting President from 1901 to 1902 due to the illness of General William Henry Harrison Beadle, who was President from 1889 to 1905. At that time, Dakota State University was the Normal School.

As early as 1917, the house was used as a dormitory for students and remained a dormitory until 1933. (In 1921, the house was purchased by the State of South Dakota from Katie Mueller who had bought the house from the Girtons.) The house was vacant from 1933 to 1935. In 1935, the Girton House became the President’s Home when President and Mrs. V.A. Lowry and their family moved into this lovely residence.

In 1962, President Flaum did extensive remodeling to the first floor of Girton. The porch became part of the living room and the library and bedroom were combined to create a new dining room. The fireplace was removed, a new downstairs added, and the kitchen was enlarged.

President Bowes remodeled the house by adding a back entry with stairs to the second floor.
